I'd like some help choosing my vacation reads. I leave in 12 days for Guatemala and Belize! I only want to bring light and entertaining books for this trip as my main priorities are consuming tropical beverages, seeing some ruins, napping in hammocks, and touching a manatee (I asked Jeff if we could bring one home and keep it in the neighbor's Koi pond. Jeff said we could keep it in the back yard and he'd hose it down like a beached whale).
My point is, I'm looking for a good, guilty pleasure read (or 2 or 3). The favoured front runners at the moment are:
1. The latest Marian Keyes book - This Charming Man. I heart Marian Keyes. I can't explain it or even justify it, but it's true.
2. One of Monica McInerney's books - I've read The Faraday Girls, Family Baggage and The Alphabet Sisters. Are any of her other books worth picking up? Has anyone read them?
3. The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer. I've heard some harsh criticism but I've also heard that it's totally addictive. Thoughts?
Has anyone read any good YA (young adult) books that they might recommend for a vacation? Or maybe a good mystery?

Marian Keyes always seems like a good choice for a holiday and I really enjoyed the Twilight series.. hope you find something good!
I am somewhat mortified to admit that I have read the first three books in the Twilight series and am reading the fourth and final book now. Talk about a guilty pleasure! I would definitely recommend taking these books on vacation. They are super easy, light, and entertaining reads with a healthy dose of drama, excitement, and sexual tension. So what if we are talking about teenage vampires? Trust me. You will have a crush on Edward before the day is done.

I'm just being snarly because I'm soooo jealous of your impending vacation. I hope you don't really bring a manatee home though... makes me feel just as uncomfortable as teenage vampires.
um...this other blogger I like more than liked Twilight and basically makes me want to run out and get it right now, so maybe it's time that the Twilight series won out?

I've read Twilight, and I thought it was okay. *Love* Marian Keyes, but bear in mind that This Charming Man is about domestic violence.
YA fiction ... I loved loved loved Un Lun Dun by China Mieville _ sooooooo good!!!!!
Mysteries for a holiday .... how about old school _ Agatha Christie _ Evil Under the Sun? :)
I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I've finished the second book and am waiting for Dan to get me the third from the li-berry. It's every teenage girl's dream to be caught in a love triangle between a sexy vampire and a smoking hot werewolf...right? These books depict teenage angst/melodrama pretty perfectly but I think I'm too old for them. I keep wanting to give the main character advice like "Don't do that. That's stupid". That said, I'm still going to try and finish out the series.
